Road caves in near ITO, leads to massive traffic snarls in Central Delhi

A pipe burst on Sunday caused a massive cave-in on Bhairon Singh Marg, leading to traffic snarls in central Delhi on Monday and Tuesday. Authorities said a 5-m deep and 10-m wide portion of the road caved in. While it was repaired on Monday, the section collapsed again a few hours later. Tanvir, a resident of Janta Camp JJ cluster, said, “A heavy tanker drove by the patch at about 2.30 pm Monday, causing the road to gradually slip in. Soon, large chunks of mud began to fall inside the gaping hole. We quickly helped to deflect traffic along with a beat constable. Some officials came and surveyed the damage. A very old water pipe of the Delhi Jal Board had burst on Sunday. The repair work had been shoddy, causing the road to crumble again a day later.”
