Hundreds of women activists heading towards the Shani Shingnapur Temple in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, to worship at the core shrine area, where women are traditionally barred, were detained and taken to Supa police station under preventive custody. Among those detained was Trupti Desai, president of the Bhumata Ranragini Brigade, which is spearheading the agitation to assert the right to equality for women. Nearly 500 women started from Pune, about 160km from the village, yesterday morning in several buses carrying protesters who joined them from across the state and expressed confidence of entering the open platform in shrine. Desai had said, “Whatever happens, we’ll go. We have come in peace. We are only going to offer prayers.
