The Mamata-Mulayam googly has upturned established political equations in New Delhi....but behind the political heat and dust kicked up by recent events - it is the UPA's mascot...economist prime minister Manmohan Singh who finds himself in the eye of a storm. The reformist former Finance Minister, who is credited with steering India through rather choppy waters in 1991, has had to recently face flak from all directions. The largest opposition party, the BJP has targeted him for taking orders from 10 Janpath, essentially acting like a lame-duck prime minister. Recently, Manmohan Singh has also had to face fire from the anti-graft movement in the country, with his Mr. Clean image coming under scanner over the multi crore coal gate scam. But perhaps crucially Manmohan Singh has also become a bug-bear for the Congress party itself, with sections calling out for a change of guard at the top.
