The ugly taint of match fixing is once again back in the headlines. The Sunday Times in London is reporting that Indian bookmakers tried to influence World Cup matches last year. The paper claims it had uncovered evidence that tens of thousands of pounds were on offer to players to throw part or all of international matches, including last year's World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan. This is what the newspaper claims as the bookie's rates for the World Cup match. About 44,000 Pounds were offered to batsmen for slow scoring. 55,000 Pounds offered to bowlers for conceding runs. And a whopping 750,000 Pounds for a player or official who guarantees match outcome.
