Ayman al-Zawahiri to succeed Osama as al-Qaeda's chief

Ayman al-Zawahiri has been formally appointed al-Qaeda's new chief, following the killing of Osama bin Laden six weeks ago. The Egyptian-born surgeon was considered the ideological brains behind al Qaeda and allegedly helped plan the 9/11 attacks. He was Bin Laden's mentor and physician for several years.
