Tokyo Olympic scrap metal medals
Since Tokyo launched an initiative to make its 2020 Olympic medals with recycled metals in April 2017, collection boxes have been distributed across the country to gather discarded electronic devices.
The aim was to collect 30 kg (67 lbs) of gold, 4,100 kg (9,040 lbs) of silver and 2,700 kg (5950 lbs) of bronze to produce over 2,600 medals for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo.
As of late February 2019, the target has already been reached for bronze, and the precious metals gold and silver at 94% and 85% respectively, on target for the collection period deadline at the end of March 2019.
Designs of the medals will be revealed in the summer, one year before the Tokyo Games get underway on July 24, 2020.
