GERMANY / RUSSIA — Russia and Germany plan to build an energy pipeline that will bypass Ukraine, according to DW.

The pipeline, named "Nord Stream 2", will be 1,200 kilometers long. It is planned to connect Europe to natural gas reserves in northern Russia, according to offshoretechnology.com.

The project is being led by Russia and is expected to bypass Ukraine and run under the Baltic Sea. DW reports Germany and Russia both want to expand the pipeline from the existing Nord Stream 1. Both nations also want to double its current capacity.

According to RT, the pipeline will carry natural gas from Russia to Europe and could provide up to 70 percent of Europe's gas needs.
