Mark Sanford warns that a “Hitler-like character” could come to power in the United States.

Outgoing Republican Representative Mark Sanford of South Carolina warns that a "Hitler-like character" could come to power in the United States, reports The Hill. Sanford shared his planned parting remarks via Facebook on Wednesday.
The post referenced a part of Friedrich Hayek's book, 'A Road To Serfdom,' that is about "the rise of Hitler in post-WWI German history."  "As open political systems become cumbersome and inefficient, inevitably a strong man comes along and offers easy promises," the lawmaker wrote. "He says that he can take care of it for us. People desperate for a change accept his offer. They have to give up a few freedoms in the equation to get more security."  "I want to be clear and explicit that I am not likening Trump to Hitler, but the forces at play could lead to a future Hitler-like character if we don't watch out," Sanford further noted. "It must be remembered that another thing that Benjamin Franklin said was that he who trades his freedom for security, deserves neither." The representative has been a critic of the president and was among the few Republicans who demanded that President Trump release his tax returns.  In the 2018 primaries, Trump supported Sanford's opponent, Representative Katie Arrington, and said in a tweet, "Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to [make American great again]. He is MIA and nothing but trouble."  While Arrington went on to win that election, the seat ultimately went to a Democrat.
