The two southern states have been at loggerheads over the makedatu project as Karnataka maintains that the extra water drawing won’t affect the mandatory allocation of water to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Makedatu project was announced in 2013 to solve the drinking problems of Bengaluru and Ramanagar district. The Tamil Nadu government filed a plea before the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the state of Karnataka from proceeding the construction of two reservoirs at Mekedatu which will affect the natural flow of the river cauvery.
