A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS of 1,009 adults from October 4-7 has found that 46 percent think Trump will win versus 47 percent who think he will lose.
Despite the negative edge, CNN says "that's a steep improvement for him since March, when 54% of adults said they thought he'd lose his bid for a second term."
"The share seeing a second Trump win in the offing has risen across party lines," the news outlet also notes. "The increase is a bit sharper among men (up 8 points), independents (from 39% in March to 47% now) and those who are enthusiastic about voting in this year's midterms (from 37% in March to 46% now)."
A recent analysis by Time magazine echoes this finding, characterizing his approval numbers as "stable" but "polarized" along party lines. The piece also argues that Trump's strong fundraising for 2020 and the robust U.S. economy are both positives for a re-election bid.
However, a midterm loss of the U.S. House of Representatives could hamper his agenda, and poll figures show he may be vulnerable on a state-by-state basis.
Nevertheless, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has gone on the record to predict a Trump victory, telling The Guardian: "Unless something terrible happens to the economy, he'll be re-elected. Anybody who watched him take apart 16 Republicans and Hillary Clinton and the elite media should ask themselves, 'What will Trump be like as candidate when he has all the advantages of the presidency and he only has to beat one Democrat?' I suspect he will be pretty impressive."
