Rare martial eagle filmed eating massive lizard in South Africa

A traffic jam formed last week in South Africa's Kruger National Park as safari-goers spotted Africa's largest bird of prey feasting on a huge lizard.

The tourists got unusually close to the rare martial eagle and were able to see clearly the bird digging its talons into the rock monitor.

"Mostly it’s the big cats such as lion and leopard that draw huge numbers of tourists to a sighting," said the filmer.

"No big cats on this day but everyone realized and appreciated the fact that we all were looking at Africa’s largest bird of prey standing on top its kill," he added.

Martial eagles are enormous birds which can weigh more than six kilos and have a wingspan of almost two metres.

The rock monitor is Africa's second largest lizard and can reach lengths of up to 1.5 metres.
