According to Reuters, more than 462,000 utility customers are without power in the Carolinas.
Those customers include households and businesses.
Power companies in North and South Carolina said the power outages were caused by Hurricane Florence making landfall.
Although the storm is now a tropical depression, heavy rains have saturated the soil, causing widespread flooding.
