Hurricane Florence Leaves North Carolina Woman without Home Again

Lumberton, North Carolina resident Angela Freeman-Culler has been displaced by two hurricanes — Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and now Hurricane Florence.
“Everybody wants a home,” she said “And then I lose my home again. And my kid’s all I got.”
Hurricane Matthew flooded the apartment she shared with her 29-year-old son and Angela said they were forced to sleep in the woods and share a tent behind a Walmart.
“Me and my son couldn’t be together 24 hours a day, but being here by myself? No one — y’all didn’t see the characters that was out there. I was totally afraid, scared to death, and I had panic attacks so. Every little creak it made, I would start panicking,” she explained.
Angela eventually moved from the woods to an affordable housing community and her son stayed with a friend after getting help from people in the community. But Angela’s current apartment is now flooded due to Florence. She fears she’ll have to live in a tent again if FEMA doesn’t help her.
“I didn’t get help last time. To them, I’m nobody. But I am somebody,” she said. “So I’ve prepared myself to go back. To the woods. All over again.”
Angela said she applied for FEMA assistance after Hurricane Matthew, but said she was denied.
