Typhoon Mangkhut Batters Ilocos Norte Province After Making Landfall in the Philippines

Typhoon Mangkhut, also known locally as Ompong, made landfall in the Philippines’ province of Cagayan at around 1:40 am on Saturday, September 15, according to the country’s weather bureau.Mangkhut unleashed torrential rain and high winds in northern Luzon, with Cagayan and Ilocos Norte among the provinces where the highest typhoon signal was raised, local media reported on Saturday.The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said an estimated 5.2 million people were within 77 miles of the projected path of Mangkhut.More than 15,000 people from 10 provinces were evacuated on Friday, September 14, NDRRMC said.Mangkhut, said to be the biggest storm on this planet this year, is expected to hit Hong Kong and southern China in coming days.This footage, shared online on September 15, shows strong winds lashing Bacarra, in Ilocos Norte.
