Dr Mahathir: Caning of same-sex couple 'not Islamic justice'

Cabinet is of the opinion that the whipping sentence imposed on two women in Terengganu was inappropriate because they it did not reflect compassion which was central to Islamic teachings.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said administration was of the view that the two women were first-time offenders and therefore the authorities should have advised them rather than to subject them to corporal punishment.
