Hurricane Lane exits, but floods still a threat to islands

While the worst of Hurricane Lane is over, authorities warned on Sunday, August 26, that several areas are still flooded and that rain will continue throughout the week.

The state of Hawaii's Department of Public Works began the process of damage assessment on the same day.

Residents in Big Island, Oahu and Maui experienced heavy winds and severe flooding starting Thursday, which damaged houses and washed out roads. Over two feet of rain was dumped in 24 hours.

Lane, originally a Category 5 hurricane in the middle of the week, was downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday. All warnings were cancelled over the weekend as the storm turned west and moved away from the state.
