The historic merger between Disney and Fox is set to change the face of movies. On the surface, it seems like a win for superhero fans who can’t wait to see the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, and more return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But as tantalizing as the prospect of an epic superhero reunion is, the latest Disney Fox update has us concerned about what it could mean for movies. If you follow movie news sites, you’ll know that the Fox Disney deal has thrown a lot of wrenches in the works for movies like the “New Mutants” and “X-Men Dark Phoenix,” and it could impact future releases as well.
The success of Deadpool and Deadpool 2, not to mention the Wolverine movie Logan, proved that R-rated movies could shine at the box office. But as well as they did, they didn’t make the same kind of money that Avengers Infinity War or Guardians of the Galaxy did. When it comes to the new Disney Fox deal, Marvel movies might not be worth risking the R-rating, and that goes for other franchises they now own like “Die Hard,” “Alien, and Predator.” Disney isn’t some benevolent company with your best interest at heart — they’re in the business of making money, but kneejerk decisions like the James Gunn firing cast serious doubts on their judgment. Now that they all but control 40% of the box office, sure, we’ll get the superhero-packed flicks we’ve always dreamed of, but we might pay a steep price for the privilege.
