Buildings Destroyed, Many Displaced After 2nd Earthquake in Indonesia

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake brought more destruction to Indonesia on Thursday, August 9, four days after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook the area of Lombok.This video shows the damage at a college campus in Mataram, Indonesia, following the August 9 earthquake.At least 259 people were had died by Thursday as a result of both earthquakes, with that number expected to rise, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB)..The first earthquake struck on Sunday, August 5, and was followed by more than 391 aftershocks by Thursday, Sutopo said. More than 270,000 people had been displaced, including more than 158,000 in Lombok Utara District alone.Indonesian news website Republika, citing officials, reported that 67,857 homes, three hospitals, 15 mosques, 50 prayer rooms, 468 schools, six bridges and 20 offices had been damaged by August 9.
