Cambodians prepare polling booths for 'sham' elections
  • 6 years ago
Cambodian officials were today (Saturday) preparing polling booths for Sunday's elections, which have been widely criticised as a 'sham'.

The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) is running without a significant challenge after the main opposition party was made illegal last year. The leader was jailed and its MPs banned from politics for five years.

Nineteen different parties are on the ballot sheets for the election tomorrow - but all are either linked to the CPP or are too small to make any significant impact.

There have been claims of threats and intimidation of opposition leading up to the vote.

Despite the concerns, foreign countries including the U.S., Australia and Japan have said they will not be sending in election monitors.
