5 Gross Things
That Are Legally
Allowed in Your Food The FDA allows certain defects in
mass-produced food to slide. According to their
'Defect Levels Handbook,'
they consider these gross things
still safe for humans to consume. 1. Beetle eggs in canned
or frozen asparagus. They'll pull the product if "10% by count of spears or pieces
are infested with 6 or more attached
asparagus beetle eggs and/or sacs." 2. Rodent hairs
in cinnamon. Less than 11 rodent hairs per 50 grams of cinnamon is A-OK. 3. Insect fragments in macaroni. An "average of 225 insect fragments or more per 225 grams in 6 or more subsamples" are considered
too many. 4. Sand
in raisins. Less than an average
of 40 mg of sand per
100 grams of natural or golden
bleached raisins is acceptable. 5. Worms and mold in
canned and frozen peaches. The average count of worms and mold must be less than 3%. Try not to think about it next time
you go grocery shopping.
