Trader Joe's Shooting Began With a Domestic Dispute The shooting took place in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, leaving one dead and dozens held hostage. Before heading to the Trader Joe's, Gene Evin Atkins shot his grandmother after she complained that he had too many televisions on. Mary Elizabeth Madison, 76, is
improving following surgery. Atkins girlfriend was grazed by one of the bullets, but Atkins, 28, then forced her into his grandmother's car and drove away. A police chase ensued during which Atkins fired at officers before crashing into a pole outside the
Trader Joe's. The hostage situation lasted for close to three hours. Finally, Atkins agreed to handcuff himself, walking out of the store surrounded by
four hostages. He is being held on $2 million bail.
