'Subdued and Listless' Baby Orangutan Rescued From Tiny Wooden Cage

An infant orangutan estimated to be around two years of age was rescued from standing in its own feces in a small, wooden cage by International Animal Rescue.Photos and video of the orangutan’s rescue were shared on June 19, and he was described as “subdued and listless, in spite of the commotion surrounding the rescue team’s arrival.” The person keeping the infant in his home claimed he had found the animal alone on the industrial tree plantation in which he worked. He had been feeding the orangutan fruit and condensed milk. The orangutan, named Uka, was given a medical check by the team’s vet before he was cleared to travel back to IAR’s Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Ketapang, Borneo.Uka was provided with teddy bears for comfort when he arrived in his new home, and will remain in quarantine for several weeks before he is deemed cleared from any contagious diseases and allowed to socialize with other orangutans his own age.“It seems that Uka is suffering from a flu virus which he may well have caught from the human beings around him. If we hadn’t rescued him when we did, his condition could have deteriorated rapidly and could even have ended in tragedy,” said IAR Chief Executive, Alan Knight OBE.
