Migrants Board Italian Coast Guard Vessels for Transfer to Valencia

More than 600 migrants, rescued from the sea off Libya on June 9 by the SOS Mediterranee vessel Aquarius, were headed to Valencia, Spain, on June 12, after Italian authorities refused to allow the ship to land for several days.In a tweet on June 11, Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s new prime minister, said the migrants were welcome at the Port of Valencia.About half of the 629 migrants were transferred to two Italian ships, and all three vessels were expected to reach Valencia by June 15, according to a press release from SOS Mediterranee.In the days prior, MSF Sea said the Aquarius was overcrowded.
