Once an integral part of Ramzan tradition, the drummers who go around waking people for their morning feast before fasting begins, are a vanishing breed in Pakistan today. Rattling out syncopated beats from a dhol drum, 66-year-old Lal Hussain has been sauntering through the empty streets of Pakistan’s Rawalpindi during the holy month for the last 35 years. But as more Pakistanis connect to the grid and purchase smartphones or rely on digital clocks to rouse them for Sehri, the future of Hussain and others like him is becoming uncertain.
