Simon Ellis, 46, claims the attacker hit the police officer with a range of blows - leaving her with a smashed and disfigured ankle, bleeding wound at the back of her head and one of her fingers was hanging off.

The attacker is believed to be Nathan Sumner, 36, who lived at a house in Plowright Close.

Police have said they were called to a property at this address to reports of a "domestic incident" last night (Wed), where a police officer received "multiple serious injuries".

Neighbour Mr Ellis said he saw a male and a female police officer at the maisonette block where he lives in Sheffield, South Yorks., after they had been called out to reports of a disturbance by one of the neighbours.

Sumner's attack is believed to have happened within minutes of the officers arriving.

Mr Ellis said: "The lady police officer had been injured the most, came half-staggering, half-falling out of the stairwell.
