Ottery St Mary Tar Barrel Running

Hundreds of people gathered in the town of Ottery St Mary, Devon, to watch the annual spectacle of dare devils carrying flaming tar barrels through the crowded streets on the 5th of November. The tradition, thought to originate after the gunpowder plot in 1605, involves 'Barrel Rollers' hoisting the large coal tar coated flaming barrels up onto their shoulders and parading through the streets of the West country town.
