Largest blood bank in the world processes 850,000 donations per year

This is the world's largest blood bank - stocked with over 1,000 gallons of fluid which will save countless lives over Christmas. The NHS Blood and Transplant centre in Filton, Bristol, is preparing for a spike in demand as booze-related accidents and car crashes rise over the festive period. It handles 11,500 blood donations - averaging around a pint each - every week (850,000 donations a year), making it the largest processing centre on earth. The unit provides life-saving blood to 100 hospitals across the south west of England with an emergency 'blue-light' service when stocks run out.
