Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Anti-Apartheid Activist,
Dies at 81 Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday. Spokesman Victor Dlamini said in a statement that she died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years, including the 27 years he was imprisoned by the minority-white apartheid regime. Madikizela-Mandela was a prominent activist in the anti-apartheid movement. However, her reputation was damaged following her conviction in 1991 for kidnapping and assault, for which she was fined. Still, she will be remembered by many as a revolutionary and heroic figure. Retired archbishop and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu said she was a
"defining symbol of the struggle against apartheid". Desmond Tutu
