The Faery Hole
Jenny Jump State Forest
Within the Jenny Jump State Forest lies the small naturally formed cave called the Faery Hole. There is a parking lot along Shades of Death Road next to Ghost Lake. The moderately rocky (unmarked) path runs along Ghost Lake and will take you to the Faery Hole.
In 1936 archaeologist, Dr. Dorothy Cross excavated the cave and surrounding grounds finding Lenape artifacts, also uncovering ten thousand bone fragments belonging to over 23 mammal species. Most notable find was a tooth from an extinct Castoroide (Giant Beaver). Currently the only inhabitants of the cave are cave crickets.

There are three natural caves in this location, the Faery Cave being the easiest to travel to. The Faery Hole is about 30 feet long and contained within Franklin Marble (The Franklin Marble dates back to the Precambrian geologic era).
An early marine environment provided the proper conditions for algae and stromatolites to thrive). The Faery Hole has a 10 feet diameter opening in an enormous rock face.
To even further add to the mystery of the location there is a natural vertical “chimney” at the back of the cave which emanates very cool air and an eerie sound that’s almost a whisper when the wind blows.
The Fairy Tube is the next cave, but a little more difficult to get to. You will have to venture over a rock wall and traverse thicker brush. According to the surveys from geologists, this cave is 20 feet long and was also used by the natives as shelter during thier travels.
The third cave is named the Fairly Low Cave, which consists of several low rooms connected by crawlways. The path to the Fairly Low Cave is not well traveled or defined. It is a few hundreds north east of the Fairy Hole. The cave is about 3X4 and 160 feet long. Hence the name, you will have to crawl through the low ceiling if you wish to explore.
