North Carolina Woman Gives Malnourished Walmart Fish a New Lease on Life
  • 6 years ago
A Charlotte, North Carolina, resident came to the rescue of a malnourished and tailless fish she found lingering on a back shelf of a Walmart store, taking it home and caring for it as its tail grew back.Victoria Schild was shopping at a Walmart when she came across the emaciated Siamese fighting fish, also known as a betta, tucked behind a group of prettier bettas on a shelf.Speaking to The Dodo, Schild said she thought the fish, who she named Argo, was on the brink of death and took him home with her to give him comfort in a larger tank for his final few hours. However, the fish started to get better after a week of clean water, medicine, and basic care. After four weeks, the once-malnourished fish is now unrecognizable.“It’s unfortunate that people dismiss bettas,” Schild said. “With just basic care and a proper setup, they are great little pets to have. I hope Argo’s story can bring awareness to the plight of bettas and other fish in pet stores. We need to be their voices.” Credit: Victoria Schild via Storyful
