Villagers living on the slopes of the Sinabung volcano in Indonesia reported day turned into night when ash from the erupting volcano blocked out the sun briefly on Monday, February 19.Juhendri Pelawi shared video showing falling ash in the gloom that morning in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, after the volcano erupted just before 9 am local time. Videos shared later by Pelawi show streets and buildings covered in a thick layer of volcanic ash.Indonesian newspapers Kompas and Tribun reported several villages were evacuated following the eruption and accounts from villagers of ash blocking the sun.Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) issued a warning notice to aviators that the ash cloud had reached 24,000 feet and was expected to blow southeast-east.
