New Zealanders Build Island to Avoid NYE Drinking Ban A group of New Zealanders got creative and built a small island in coastal waters. The effort was seemingly an attempt to avoid the ban on drinking in public places. The group then installed a picnic table on top of the island. Violation of the ban in New Zealand is $180 or arrest. Local media reported the group watched fireworks from the structure and the island was still intact on New Year's Day.
