SEATTLE — Fifty-five years opening, Seattle's iconic Space Needle is undergoing a massive multi-million dollar makeover.

Seattle Times reports that workers recently raised a donut-shaped platform to begin work on the Space Needle's $100 million renovation project.

Updates will focus mostly on the observation deck and restaurant, and are set to be completed by May 2018.

To give visitors more sweeping views of the city, the observation deck's pony walls and cages will be replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass panels.

SkyCity, the Needle's restaurant, will be fitted with glass floors and a new motor, and will become the world's first glass-floor rotating restaurant once it reopens.

The current renovation project is expected to keep the iconic landmark relevant for the next 50 years or so. Other changes include a new coat of paint on the exterior, and more elevators.
