Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that President Trump should be shown more respect by people in the U.S.
He made the comment Thursday during a Valdai International Discussion Club event after someone asked him about his Western counterpart.
“Mr. Trump was elected by the American people. And at least for this reason it is necessary to show respect for him, even if you do not agree with some of his positions," Putin said, according to the Russian news agency TASS. "Inside the country, disrespect is shown for him. This is a regrettable negative component of the US political system."
“One can argue but one can’t show disrespect,” Putin added.
And the Russian leader went on to blame what he called “the great domestic resistance” for Trump’s seeming unpredictability and lack of legislative achievements.
Putin’s largely sympathetic remarks were made the same day the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, blasted Russia for interfering in the 2016 election, calling the behavior “warfare.”
“I will tell you that when a country can come interfere in another country’s elections, that is warfare. It really is, because you’re making sure that the democracy shifts from what the people want to giving out that misinformation,” Haley said during an event hosted by the George W. Bush Institute.
Putin has continued to deny any involvement in the U.S. election. He has instead suggested Russia is being used as a scapegoat for Trump’s victory.
