Diwali is a very popular Hindu festival. It is one of the most important Indian festivals which is either celebrated in the month of October or November. Diwali literally means 'row of lamps'. So, it is understandable that lamps play the most important role in this festival. On Diwali, each house is lit up with oil lamps, candles and colorful electric lights. Light is significant in Hinduism because it signifies purity, goodness, good luck and power. The existence of light means the non- existence of darkness and evil forces. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ದೀವಟಿಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಹಣತೆ ಸದಾ ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿರಬೇಕು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಸದಾ ದೇವರ ಅನುಗ್ರಹ ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಬಲ್ಲೆವು. ಇದರ ಜ್ವಾಲೆ ಬಾಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತಲನ್ನು ನಿವಾರಿಸಿ ಬೆಳಕು ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇದರ ಹಿಂದೆ ಒಂದು ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಕಾರಣವೂ ಇದೆ. ಹಣತೆಯ ಜ್ವಾಲೆಗೆ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯಸ್ಕಾಂತೀಯ ಅಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿದೆ. ದೀಪಾವಳಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ನೂರಾರು ದೀಪಗಳನ್ನು ಉರಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಗಾಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೇಲಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಬ್ಯಾಕ್ಟೀರಿಯಾ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಮಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದೀಪವನ್ನು ಹಚ್ಚಲು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಹರಳೆಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದೀಪ ಹಚ್ಚುವಾಗ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು

ಶುಭಮ್ ಕರೋತಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಂ ಆರೋಗ್ಯಮ್ ಧನಸಂಪದಃ |
ಶತ್ರುಬುದ್ಧಿರ್ವಿನಾಶಾಯ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿ ನಮೋಸ್ತುತೇ ||
ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿಃ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿಃ ಜನಾರ್ದನಃ |
ದೀಪೋ ಹರತಿ ಪಾಪಾನಿ ಸಂಧ್ಯಾದೀಪಂ ನಮೋಸ್ತುತೇ ||
