Kellyanne Conway has revealed how she talked about 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to her four children--three of whom are girls.
“In explaining how I feel about one thing that Donald Trump said or did to my daughters, I would be remiss in not revealing the full conversation, which is also why Mommy, who’s a woman, did not support the first female presidential candidate of a major party,” the White House counselor said in an interview with Time.
“I would tell them that I respect very much that Secretary Clinton was running for president, and it showed that in this country, anybody can do anything if they set their mind to it," she continued. "At the same time, I tried to explain to them that you could be excited for someone with whom you disagree, and share in that moment in history as a proud American.”
She spoke with Time as part of a special series on pioneering women; it identifies her as “the first woman to have run a winning presidential campaign.”
Conway, a former polling expert for the Republican party, was named Trump’s campaign manager in August 2016.
“I’ve been in a very male-dominated business for decades. I found, particularly early on, that there’s plenty of room for passion, but there’s very little room for emotion," she said at the time. "I tell people all the time, ‘Don’t be fooled, because I am a man by day.’”
However, more recently, she described herself to Fox News as “a protocol and pecking-order kind of gal.”
She also discussed her humble approach to the president, saying, “I do think that it's important to set up that level of deference and humility when you've got someone who's your boss ... who is clearly your senior, your superior.”
