Republican Senator Ben Sasse has called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer “the most powerful man in America.”

Republican Senator Ben Sasse has called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer “the most powerful man in America.”
The Hill reports that the Nebraska lawmaker made the comment on the Senate floor Thursday while speaking out against a deal President Trump made with Democratic leaders including Schumer to temporarily raise the debt ceiling and provide Hurricane Harvey relief aid.
Towards the end of his speech proposing a bill aimed at separating funding for hurricane recovery from other government business, Sasse rhetorically asked his colleagues, “Do your constituents know that Chuck Schumer--whose title is minority leader not majority leader--just made himself the most powerful man in America for the month of December? Chuck Schumer has made himself the key man in all negotiations in December because of the legislation we’re going to pass today.”
Some Republicans have also expressed concern over the short-term nature of the deal as well as an absence of other policies to offset the potential increase in government spending, notes the New York Times.
Despite these issues, Sasse’s plan was voted down and the Senate ended up approving the full package which includes $15 billion in disaster aid as well as debt limit and funding measures.
NBC News reports that Sasse, along with 16 other GOP colleagues, voted against the bill.
The measure is expected to pass through the House before Trump gives his final approval.
