Lawmakers in Southern California approved on Tuesday a measure to name a stretch of the state’s 134 Freeway as the President Barack H. Obama Highway, reports the Sacramento Bee.

The road portion passes through Pasadena, Glendale, and Eagle Rock.
The Associated Press notes that Democratic Senator Anthony Portantino, one of the proposal’s authors, said that Obama had attended Eagle Rock’s Occidental College and traveled along that freeway when going to and from classes.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Matthew Harper, a Republican Assemblyman, expressed reservations about the renaming, saying that it’s occurring too soon into Obama’s post-presidency years.
The media outlet writes that Harper, “noted that a section of the 90 Freeway was named after President Nixon until he ended up resigning after the Watergate scandal.”
Despite that concern, the renaming initiative is moving forward to the signage phase, with Caltrans working on cost estimates. Once the signs are up, the Obama stretch of freeway will join another bearing the name of a former U.S. president.
The Sacramento Bee notes, "Highway 118 in the San Fernando area is named after Ronald Reagan, the 40th U.S. president."
