Clinton writes, in part, that Sanders’ frequent mentions of her well-compensated corporate speeches, “caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump's 'Crooked Hillary' campaign."
Trump appears to have first used the moniker in April 2016, a time when he was on an unflattering nickname spree, notes the Washington Times.
He reportedly said in New York, “So I’m self-funding — all of this is mine. When I fly in, it’s on my dime, right? It’s on mine. And what does that mean? That means I’m not controlled by the special interests, by the lobbyists. They control Crooked Hillary and they control Lyin’ Ted Cruz, right?”
Over time, the name has been used in a variety of contexts.
For instance, in June, Trump said, "Crooked [Hillary] destroyed phones w/ hammer, 'bleached' emails, & had husband meet [with attorney general] days before she was cleared- & they talk about obstruction?"
