Nandyal by-poll result will be a close call going by its electoral history . More than a fight between political parties, the battle is between individual leaders, who are bitter political rivals and invariably find themselves on different sides of the political fence.
In 1996, 1998 and 1999, he won from the Nandyal Lok Sabha constituency on a TDP ticket. As a TDP candidate, Bhuma suffered a jolt in the 2004 assembly elections from Allagadda. He was trounced by Congress candidate Gangula Pratap Reddy. In 2009 polls, Bhuma suffered another setback when he contested Lok Sabha polls from the Nandyal seat on the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of actor Chiranjeevi.
In 2014 polls, he sailed with Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and contested from Nandyal assembly seat on YSRCP ticket and won. In February 2016, Bhuma joined TDP. After his death in March this year, the by-poll was necessitated. Except Congress, Bhuma was in TDP, PRP and YSRCP.
The election in 2014 was also close. He defeated Silpa Mohan Reddy of TDP by a margin of only 3,604 votes. Silpa Mohan Reddy has been fielded again, this time by YSRCP. This time, his main rival is Bhuma Brahamanda Reddy, nephew of Bhuma Nagi Reddy. Silpa Nagi Reddy's confidence about a comeback is also because he got elected as legislator from the same constituency in 2009 and 2004 elections, both times on a Congress ticket.
Before that, the seat was held by N Mohammad Farooq of TDP in 1999 and 1994 elections. Congress' V Ramanath won in 1989 elections. Silpa Mohan Reddy had a convincing win in the 2009 elections.
In 2004 elections, Silpa Mohan Reddy who emerged winner, got 89,612 votes leaving TDP's N Md Farooq (40,935 votes) far behind. Silpa Mohan Reddy quit the TDP and is fighting to get back the Nandyal seat on a YSRCP ticket. Congress has fielded Abdul Khader, an advocate to fight the poll.
