President Trump’s Thursday morning tweets included one directed at former national intelligence director James Clapper.
“James Clapper, who famously got caught lying to Congress, is now an authority on Donald Trump," Trump said. "Will he show you his beautiful letter to me?”
It’s unclear what letter he’s talking about, but Clapper did, indeed, recently make a number of comments regarding Trump’s leadership capabilities.
In a Wednesday morning interview with CNN, Clapper commented on the president’s Tuesday night speech in Phoenix and characterized it as “downright scary and disturbing.”
“I really question his...fitness to be in this office," Clapper told host Don Lemon. "I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it — maybe he is looking for a way out.”
When asked if he deems Trump a threat to national security, Clapper expressed concern about Trump’s easy access to the nation’s nuclear codes.
He said, “In a fit of pique he decides to do something about Kim Jong-un, there’s actually very little to stop him.”
As for Trump’s assertion that Clapper lied to Congress, according to The Hill, it is an apparent reference to the then-director’s 2013 testimony on government surveillance in the U.S.
At the time, Clapper stated that there is no collection of data on citizens, but later backtracked, calling his statement, “clearly erroneous.”
