HOMA BAY, KENYA — Of all the things a person could see in life, watching your child be carried away by a crocodile is without question up there with the worst.

As reported by Daily Nation, on August 17, Margaret Atieno and her two 13-year-old twin daughters went to fetch water at Ng'ou Beach. Little did they realize a hungry croc was lying in wait. As they were leaving the shore, one of the girls, Hellen Amondi, ran back to rinse mud off her feet. When one of her shoes got stuck, the next thing she knew, the croc had grabbed her.

Her mother and sister could only watch in horror as the crocodile pulled her out into the water. Helpless, the last place Margaret saw her child's body was between the jaws of the beast, far away from the shore near the deep waters of the lake. A team of armed rangers went in search of Hellen, but they have not found a trace of the girl.

Local officials report crocodile attacks have risen in that particular village. The menacing reptiles are also believed to be responsible for decimating livestock in the area.
