A historian has said that Charlottesville, Virginia, would likely be viewed in the future as “a pivotal moment in President Trump's political collapse.”
New York University professor and former director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, Tim Naftali, made the prediction when he was asked by CNN how history books would one day view the incident within the context of Trump’s presidency.
Naftali said, “Historians are terrible prognosticators, especially this one, but given the trend lines today, the Charlottesville episode is likely to be viewed by later historians as a pivotal moment in President Trump's political collapse and a defining moment in the history of the Republican Party.”
His comment comes on the heels of intense criticism over Trump’s remarks on Tuesday where he seemed to defend white nationalists by asserting that “there's blame on both sides” for the weekend violence in Charlottesville.
It may very well be a turning point, with the Washington Post reporting that, since the controversy, Trump “finds himself more isolated than ever from his own party, world leaders and the business community...a fissure that was growing for weeks but turned into a chasm...”
And veteran GOP operative Ed Rogers writes in a separate op-ed in the Post, “With his response to Charlottesville, Trump has marginalized himself and altered the potential that he has as president…And it will be impossible for Republicans to completely disassociate themselves from it.”
