Republican strategist and CNN commentator Ana Navarro weighed in Monday morning on President Trump’s Saturday statement regarding the violence that erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Navarro, who had previously suggested that the president’s response is his lowest of many low points, was asked, “Why do you feel this was the worst of the worst?”
She responded, in part, “This was a moment for him and he blew it to such a level in order to pander to members of his base who he did not want to antagonize. At a moment when the country so badly needed to hear from the president of the United States about healing and unity and condemning white supremacy...condemning racism, and condemning neo-Nazis, he was a coward.”
Navarro also characterized Trump as, “unfit to be human“ and "a shameful nincompoop.”
President Trump only made a brief appearance and statement on Saturday.
He said, “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. It's been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama, this has been going on for a long, long time. It has no place in America."
Trump later and via a tweet acknowledged the death of a 32-year-old woman who was killed when a car sped into the area where she and many other counter-protesters were gathered.
The president wrote, “Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!"
Trump did denounce white supremacists in a press briefing Monday, saying in part, "Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans."
