CNN host Don Lemon has blasted President Trump, saying his most recent comments--where he once again blamed both sides for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia--were reflective of the “real Donald Trump.”
In a broadcast that followed Trump’s remarks at a press conference Tuesday, Lemon said, “This is a sad moment for the country, and I think it was an awful moment for the person who is supposed to represent the highest office of the land. I mean, there, today, you saw the real Donald Trump proving all of his critics right in that moment.”
Lemon then acknowledged that the so-called opposing side, which consisted of the alt-left, or anti-fascists, may not have used the best tactics, but he explained, “There is a difference between the two groups. One is a Nazi, white supremacist group...The other is a protest group, protesting a political and a racist movement.”
After Lemon briefly touched on the racism represented by the Confederate monument the white nationalists were trying to defend in Charlottesville, he declared, “The president is ignorant of history. He does not know context. He should be ashamed of himself. He should go back to school and get an elementary education on how this country started and about protest groups...”
His and other panelists’ criticisms came after the president appeared to revert to his initial comment blaming the violence in Charlottesville on “many sides.”
Trump had been widely criticized for not condemning white nationalists strongly enough so he issued a stronger condemnation days later, but he seemed to backpedal Tuesday, saying, “...you had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent, and nobody wants to say that, but I'll say it right now. You had a group -- you had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit, and they were very, very violent.”
He also questioned the removal of Confederate statues, saying, “So this week it's Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson's coming down. I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson the week after?”
