Trump picks Russia ambassador as collusion claims continue

Another day, another allegation against Donald Trump of secret collusion with Russia.

This time the US president is defending himself against claims he had a second, previously undisclosed meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at a leaders’ meal during the G20 summit in Hamburg earlier this month.

Trump took to Twitter to rubbish claims of a “secret dinner” with Putin, with the now-familiar counter-claims that the reports are “fake news”, “dishonest” and “sick”.

Scrutiny of the Trump-Putin relationship has become almost daily fare for mainstream US media and thrust under that same spotlight could be Jon Huntsman, who Trump nominated as the next US ambassador to Russia on Tuesday pending confirmation by the US Senate.

Huntsman is a former Utah governor, was a Republican party presidential candidate in 2012 and envoy to China under President Barack Obama.
