Mayweather vs. McGregor: A Look at the Numbers, Plus a Prediction

Now that we know Conor McGregor is fighting Floyd Mayweather, it might be time to examine a couple things before the scrap.

First we have to consider the way they fight.

CompuBox numbers tracked McGregor’s last 10 fights and determined he threw about 42 strikes per round. So according to Jim Lampley, not only is he a counter puncher, he’s a slow paced counter puncher. He’s a guy that likes to stand back and wait for his opponent and he looks for that one big shot to knock guys out.

The only two guys that gave Floyd problems were pure brawlers.

Those fighters threw Floyd into the ropes and threw 75 to 80 punches per round. That’s about double what Conor throws.

But you have to keep some other numbers in mind too.

Conor is one inch taller with a two inch reach advantage… but since he’s unlikey to jab, they won’t come into too much play. Floyd’s boxed 387 rounds, and Conor’s fought 37 rounds.

Then there’s the age. Floyd will be 40 years old on fight night, and he will have endured a 23 month layoff since his last time in the ring.

So what do we think.

We’re calling for McGregor to come out early and try to get Floyd off his rhythm. But it won’t work. In fact, Mayweather will “weather” the storm and go follow his traditional script and outclass the Irishman, giving Floyd a TKO victory in the 7th.

You heard it here first.
