Paris Attack: Attacker shouted 'this is for Syria'

Police are investigating an incident at Notre-Dame Cathedral Tuesday afternoon where a suspect attacked an officer with a hammer. The officer returned fire Paris police said the public should stay away from the area in a Twitter statement on Tuesday. The man shouted "this is for Syria" during the attack, France's interior minister Gerald Collomb said, and the attack is being considered an act of "terrorism." The man, believed to be an Algerian student, attacked the officer with a hammer but was also armed with knives. Tourists have been locked inside the famous cathedral as the operation continues. A police spokesperson told The Associated Press that the officer used his weapon to shoot the attacker in Tuesday's incident. The attacker is being hospitalized.
