A noose was reportedly discovered in some dense tree growth on Smithsonian grounds Friday.
According to Politico, a security officer spotted the object near the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in the evening after closing time.
It was taken down, and employees of the entire museum complex were notified by email the next morning.
David Skorton, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, told staff, “The Smithsonian is committed to be a welcoming, inclusive, and safe place for all.  I know you join me in deploring this act.”
BuzzFeed quotes the U.S. Park Police which is investigating the incident as saying, “It is unknown when the noose was hung or how long it had been there.”
A spokesperson for the Smithsonian also indicated to the media outlet that this is the first time the racially charged symbol has been found on museum grounds and that the Hirshhorn, which focuses on contemporary art, does not currently have any controversial pieces which could have incited such a reaction.
