Rio police clashes with protesters, at a time when authorities vote on new austerity measures

Police clashes with protesters outside Rio de Janeiro's legislative assembly (ALERJ), as a vote on new austerity measures took place inside.
Protesters set objects in the street alight and hurled rocks at police who retaliated with gas bombs, pepper spray and rubber bullets.
Rio authorities have defended the proposed austerity measures as necessary to contain the state's financial crisis, while protesters claim they will result in wage and pension cuts, tax increases, suspension of social programs and service pay adjustment.
